AbstractA structure like the bridge, nowadays, highly needs Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) to reduce unexpected collapse and catastrophe from the failure. General SHM system is being used with accelerometer to assess the structure in global coordinates, whereas recent research is demanding for local member responses and expecting to identify early stage of deterioration of local member. Modal strain-based measurement system is being proved to find the local member responses. This research is conducted to improve the development of modal strain-based measurement technique, especially for balance cantilever box girder bridges. In the first stage of this study, traditional acceleration measurement technique was applied to demonstrate the mode shape with related frequency, and damping ratio estimation was also done with the help of acceleration response data. Then, the dynamic strain response was collected under ambient vibration condition with regular traffic loading on the bridge by installing semi-conductor strain gauges. Finally, modal strain patterns, for flexural and shear, were developed from the analyzed dynamic strain signal after wards, they were compared with the normalized strain pattern of the numerical model. The research found a good correlation of modal strain patterns of measured data with normalized strain patterns of numerical model.
