AbstractStructural Health Monitoring (SHM) has been vastly exercised on various civil engineering infrastructure including bridges in the past decades to minimize the sudden or unexpected failure of the structure. SHM could be perform using various methods and approaches, one of the most effective and usable method to monitored the structural behavior is the vibration-based method where in this method the dynamic properties of the structure at the different time period will be extracted through ambient excitation condition to evaluate the change in behavior of the structure for damage detection of the structure. This research was conducted to extract the dynamic characteristics and to construct the modal strain pattern of Bangkok-Noi canal crossing bridge. At the beginning, the site inspection was performed at bridge site to confirm the dimension and boundary condition of the bridge associated with the bridge as-built drawing. Next, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) test was conducted to determine the modulus of elasticity of the bridge structure where the modulus of elasticity obtained from UPV measurement was updated into FEM model in order to create the bridge model close to the real bridge condition. Later, ambient vibration test under ambient traffic loading condition using acceleration measurement was conducted using vertical measuring acceleration accelerometers to extract the dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency, mode shape and damping ratio of the bridge. Finally, ambient vibration test under ambient traffic loading condition using strain measurement was conducted via strain transducer to construct the modal flexural and shear strain pattern corresponding to each frequency mode of the structure. At last, the results obtained from field measurements were compared to those from Finite Element Model (FEM) of the bridge to evaluate the SHM approach.
