AbstractThe surface wavenumbers for in-plane harmonic vibrations of a homogeneous viscoelastic half space, which are called Rayleigh wavenumbers, and two homogeneous half spaces bonded together when one and both domains are viscoelastic ,i.e. Stoneley wavenumbers, are investigated. These surface wavenumbers are evaluated by using the Newton-Raphson algorithm for complex roots and introducing the appropriate branch cuts for determining the radical functions in the equations. The half spaces are idealized as Maxwell solids and the effect of energy dissipation is included in the problems. It is found that when the energy dissipation is increased, the real part of the wavenumber slightly differs from the elastic wavenumber but the imaginary part , which indicates the attenuating characteristic a long the free surface or the interface, will significantly be increased. Other properties of the viscoelastic wavenumbers are similar to the corresponding elastic ones and the Poisson's ratio being assumed to be real gives no significant difference from being a complex one.
