AbstractGenerating electricity by using lignite as a main source of energy requires large scale the lignite-moving operation. Proper control of this operation, therefore, would result in the minimization of cost. Though the long-term planning is always done but it will not be fully effective unless the proper short-term planning is also carefully carried out have been developed in this study. Special simulation models for determining the optimum fleet size of trucks in the Mae-Moh lignite mine . Data for this study have been collected from quarry at Mae-Moh. The probability distributions for different time elements are established after intensive verification. The service time conforms to Weibull distribution whereas the dumping time, haul time and return time conform to log-normal distribution. A simulation computer package is developed through the use of Turbo-Pascal version 5.5 as a programming language. Parameters obtained from the analysis of actual field data, which include scale and shape parameters of the Weibull distribution, mean and standard deviation of the log-normal distribution are used in the simulation. The haul distance for the current operation and the type of loading equipment are fed as inputs to the program and simulation output includes production rate and unit cost. These are then compared with the deterministic estimate and the output derived from the field data. Results show that production rates obtained from simulation are lower than the deterministic estimate and are more reliable for estimation purposes as these have been found to be closer to the actual values obtained in the field.
