AbstractThis research was carried out to investigate the ultimate shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beam without shear reinforcement with consideration of displacements and propagation of shear crack. Th e effects of mod e ls for stress transfer at crack and bond - slip on the ultimate hear strength were considered by applying a finite element method to the analysis. An experiment was carried out with two simply supported beams subjected to static two points loading and the crack propagation was recorded by the laser speckle technique . Based on comparison of shear crack displacements and ultimate shear strength between the analysis and experiment, it was found that the shear crack displacements were dependent much on the models of stress transfer at crack and bond - slip ,but the ultimate s h ear strength was not . Ultimate shear strength was affected by choice of model of shear crack, namely discrete crack or smeared crack. With the proposed mode l of stress transfer at crack, the finite element method can predict the ultimate s h ear strength as well as the shear crack displacements .
