AbstractThis study presents a concept of durability design for concrete structures with the introduction of Durability Limit State. The new concept provides a methodology on how to assess durability quantitatively in terms of service life. The introduced Durability Limit State is proposed to meet the performance requirements of concret~ structures with due consideration of structural durability. A structure or part of a structure is rendered fail or unfit for use when its degree of degradation at the end of service life exceeds this particular state. In this context, the durability limit state is categorized into Limit of Ultimate Durability which corresponds to the maximum load carrying capacity of a structure and Limit of Serviceable Durability which corresponds to the behavior of structure in service under normal use. As one of the Limit of Ultimate Durability, a Limit of Structural Safety is considered in this study. The Limit of Serviceable Durability is subcategorized into Limit State of Comfortability, Limit State of Aesthetics and Limit State of Water/ Air Tightness. A durability index is introduced to have a quantitative examination for each limit state being considered. The calculation of durability index combines the degradation model and mechanical model to estimate the degradation mechanism with time. Depending upon the level of requirements, the durability limit state consists of an examination of at least one durability index in the durability design process. The concept on how to determine the appropriate specific limit values of durability indices for a particular limit state is also presented. Illustrative durability design examples using the proposed durability design method are presented. Due to the complexity of this subject, no attempt has been made to provide all the possible degradation mechanism of concrete structures. Further research for the degradation phenomena presented herein is encouraged to establish a reliable and unified analytical formulae for estimating concrete durability for each limit state being considered.
