AbstractThis Study attempts to develop irrigation water management policies including de sign and operation of intermediate reservoirs for reliability analysis of tubewell operation in a ground water irrigation project. The tubewell Suli-cli vi son of the Narayani Zone Irrigation Development Project in Nepal is taken as case study. Analysis of past pumping records is done to find the statistical characteristics of operational failures of tubewells of different. capacities. Al though the exponential distribution is found to f :it reasonably well with the duration of failures. Limited data on past operation pretended more detailed statistical analysis. Hence future failures are generated using a random uniform pattern. Climatological · data of the project area are used to find the cropwater requirement for a given cropping pattern. In order to increase the reliability of the irrigation water supply intermediate reservoirs are designed for different reliability levels of supply as well as incorporating tubewell failures. Various reliability indicators such as time based, quantity based, resiliency, seasonal reliabilities of cropwater demand satisfaction etc. are also computed. · From the analysis of the results-it is seen that the water supply reliability improves only upto certain size of the reservoirs. For large sizes, only marginal increase in reliability is observed. It may not be therefore attractive to construct a large reservoir to improve the reliability only a few percent. several scenarios of operations are also considered and alternative results are provided.
