AbstractApplication of knowledge base expert system for the calibration of NAM hydrological model has been presented in this study. For this calibration a knowledge base file which consists of a set of rules was development and also a Pascal program was written to support this knowledge base. The purpose of the pascal program was to calculate different parameters for different rules in knowledge base file. In this study for the adjustment of model parameters initially all possible types of errors were identified by comparing model simulated hydrograph with observed hydrograph. These possible types of errors were volume difference error, peak difference error, shape difference error and time lag error. After that different parameters were identified for different errors and different procedures were developed to adjust the parameters so that the above errors could be minimized. Next rules were developed for knowledge base according to adjustment procedures to reduce errors. Finally, this knowledge base was applied for the calibration of different catchment areas and results were verified by using independently data. Both calibration and verification results were found to be quite satisfactory.
