AbstractAn algorithm is developed for estimating roughness parameter of the steady and unsteady flow models used in simulating flow in an irrigation canal. The algorithm includes various combinations of water level and discharge boundaries in upstream and downstream ends. The widely applied Double-Sweep method of linearization used for solving the dynamic equations, by using 4-pint implicit finite difference scheme has been modified to use water level as the upstream boundary condition. The method developed comprises of three models: steady, unsteady and optimization model. The optimization technique which uses single and multi-pint error criteria is used in both steady and unsteady models to estimate the correct roughness coefficient for both the cases. A. two step procedure is adopted for the two cases. The calibration procedure tries to match the observed and simulated water level hydrographs at several measured station. A linear relationship has been proposed between "n" and the discharge for the steady and unsteady case. This can be used to simulate discharges and water level hydrographs at the desired station. The model in applied to SONG PHI_NONG PROJECT, THAILAND for water level in upstream boundary and to ALWDP FARM CANAL for discharge in upstream boundary. A linear relationship between "n" and discharge for both the cases are also proposed. The calibration results show good match between observed and predicted hydrographs for single as well as multi-point error criteria. However in the case of the ALWDP farm canal the optimized value of Manning's "n" is higher than that used in practice. This suggests the presence of other factors contributing to the flow resistance.
