Abstract | A two-dimensional explicit mathematical model of dam-break and dike-break wave was developed based on the two-dimensional unsteady free surface flow equation. The present model development was based on the previous work by Wattanaprateep (1987). The correction coefficients used by Wattanaprateep have been eliminated in the developed model. The present model was verified using the experimental data of Wattanaprateep (1987) and compared with the resulis of Wattanaprteep's mathematical model. The results of verification clearly indicated that the results obtained using the present model gives better results than that of Wattanaprateep(1987). Ecperimental data of U.S. Waterway Experiment Station (WES) on dam-break (1960/61) were also used for verifying the present model and the Wattanaprateep model. For this purpose, both two-dimensional models were reduced to one-dimensional models for one-dimensional computation. The results obtained by the present model and the Wattanaprateep model were compared with the experimental data of WES (1960-61). The comparison shows that present model yields the computed depth and velocity hydrographs which are in excellent agreement and the computed speed of flood wave propagation which in in good agreement with the experimental data of WES (1960-61). While, the computed results of Wattanaprateep model are only in fair agreement with the WES experimental data. |
