Abstract | An extensive experimental study has been conducted to understand the mechanisms of a two-dimensional starting plume travelling downslope. A number of important parameters to govern the flow are identified and reduced from the experimental data. An analysis for a steady inclined starting plume is proposed. A comparison between the calculated result and experimental data is also presented. It is found from this study that the expressions of the spatial growth rate and the dimensionless propagation speed of the front for steep slopes are adequately described by those proposed by Britter & Linden; the geometry of the flow in described by a quarter-elliptic shape. The volume correction factor and the front aspect ratio are determined; the velocity and density distributions follow similarity profiles; the amount of efflux from the front to the mixing layer is important in the dynamics of the front of gravity currents; a model proposed can predict the motion of steady starting plumes travelling downslope satisfactory if proper upstream boundary conditions are imposed. |
