Abstract | The need of a proper management policy for the optimum development of an aquifer systems is widely felt. Specially for the large multi-aquifer system an efficient management technique is needed to cope with dimensionality problem, encountered while incorporating a distributed parameter ground water flow model in a management model. In this study, an efficient numerical technique has been developed to generate the unit response matrix of a multi-aquifer system using the finite difference ADI scheme. An operational management model with economic objective, incorporating both pumping and recharge, has also been developed using the unit response matrix which simulate the flow explicitly. The model has been formulated in the hierarchical approach, decomposing the problems into different levels such that it can be applied to large aquifer system. The solution procedure of the management model is iterative, encompassing both quadratic and linear programming problems. The management model has been applied to the real life problem of Bangkok aquifer system, as a case study. An optimum pumping policy for the system for the next 10 years (1991-2000) has obtained satisfying the minimum pumping requirements and minimum allowable heads at different location. The model has been applied to the Bangkok aquifer system for different conditions in order to evaluate different scenarios. |
