Abstract | Southern Thailand has been subjected to intense rainfall and wide spread flooding at least once in every two years. Especially, the catastrophic flood during the third week of November 1988 caused server loss of life and damage to property in the area. Flood damage could be alleviated by flood forecasting warning. An attempt has been done to forecast the flood in U-Thaphao basin, southern Thailand, using a preliminary version of the MIKE-11 package. Three models of the MIKE-11 has been used in this study. The simulated run-off from NAM model has been used as lateral inflow into the hydrodynamic (HD) model. The simulated discharges by NAM model matched with observed discharges having almost no phase error but with some amplitude error within acceptable limit. The hydrodynamic (HD) model simulates water levels and discharges at all computational nodes which has been used as an initial condition into flood forecasting (FF) model. A gook matching between observed and simulated discharge has been observed. The flood Forecasting (FF) model with the updating facility for the adjustment of the phase and amplitude error has been used for flood forecasting. The 1988 flood data of Hat Yai subcatehment, Thailand have been used to test the FF model. It is found that the forecasted flood for the first day of the rising limb of the flood peak showed good matching with the observed data but for the other days there is quite appreciable error in phase as well as amplitude. |
