AbstractThis study is concerned with the simultaneous solution of irrigation water allocation for an optimal cropping pattern and reservoir releases based on a long term optimal policy in conjunctive surface and ground water use system. An Iterative Integrated LP-SDP-Simulation model has been developed for the steady optimal release policy from the reservoir and optimal ground water withdrawal for obtaining maximum net benefit from irrigated farming. The Proposed Bagmati Multipurpose Project in Nepal is used as a case study. The LP model incorporates the seasonal variability in energy generation. Different runs of the model show that the net total benefit obtained from agricultural production and energy generation is higher if minimization of seasonal fluctuation of energy in included in the model. The integrated model gives steady convergence and more practical results as the demands and releases are related to one another in the Model. Comparison between the results obtained from the model with deterministic demands and stochastic demands reveals that the model with stochastic demand outperforms the model with deterministic demands but consumes considerably more CPU time in computer. The results indicate that for the designed capacity of the reservoir and conjunctive use of surface water and ground water proposed command area is small and can be increased by 13% or the reservoir capacity can be reduced by 9% for the same command area.
