Abstract | A number of tube wells fail daily in the world. The causes of failure are not the same for all. It may or may not be similar to others. Several case histories of tube wells have been presented which show the causes of failure and their remedial measures. the theory of well efficiency and the test needed for its evaluation has been described in short. This is also a case history of tube well failures. Hence the factors responsible for failure have been identified by monitoring its indicator "Well efficiency" by conducting step drawdown test in the wells of Narayani tube well irrigation project, Birganj (Nepal) and comparing with the theoretical specific capacity. The well deterioration could not be determined during this thesis period due to lack of well performance test data, but it was found that there was decrease in yield compared with their design discharge. It was found that the clogging of screen was due to incrustation which was confirmed after analysis of water samples of different tube wells. Hence it seems that tube wells have failed due to incrustation. The other cause seems to be sand pumping which was found out by checking sediments deposited in different well regulation ponds and confirmed after checking the design of tube wells. Hence they acted singly or in concert. Therefore general causes of incrustation and sand pumping problems for the production tube wells and also for those tube wells which will be constructed to replace the failed tube wells. Various design methods of gravel pack have been suggested and comparted with the gravel Sized used |
