AbstractThe Red river delta is one of two biggest rice field and the largest salt culture field in Vietnam. Being the main resources of the agricultural productions for the North, it has a key role for economic development of the country. In dry season, for the lack of freshwater from upstream, salinity intrusion problem causes a lot of difficulties for irrigation. The Knowledge of the characteristics of flow and salinity intrusion therefore is very important for utilization of the river estuaries. Characteristics of flow and salinity intrusion in the river delta are investigated based on many-year recorded data of salinity and hydraulic characteristics at stations along red River and its branches. A numerical model is employed to simulate the hydraulic characteristics and salinity intrusion in the river delta. It is found that the numerical model can produce good results and can be used for predicting hydraulic characteristics and salinity intrusion in the system of rivers. The results show that the estuaries can be classified as partly mixed. In dry season, the whole Ninhco river is suffered from salinity intrusion, while for the other branches, the length of intrusion might be up to 20 km. For stations along the Red and Day rivers, where higher freshwater discharge existed, the maximum salinity is observed in January and for the Ninhco and Traly rivers, where lower freshwater distribution of the freshwater discharge in the river system control the pattern of the salinity intrusion.
