AbstractA capability to solve large-scale eigensystems for a number of fundamental eigenfrequencies and the corresponding mode shapes has been an important feature for the development of a powerful of eigensolutions finite element have been package . Various methods proposed for structural problems . Among them, the Lanczos algorithm for transforming the problem to a tridiagonal reduced eigensystem has been gaining increasing popularity in recent years due to its extreme efficiency. In this study, the Lanczos algorithm is impleme nted in a general finite element program FEAP. The effect of the size of subspace on the solution accuracy is investigated. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate its superior p erformance in comparison with the subspace iteration . The algorithm is found to be an order of magnitude faster than the subspace iteration when a large number of eigenfrequencies are required.
