Abstract | This study presents the investigation of the deformation behaviour of level ground resting over an inclined base. Such investigation was carried out by CRISP finite element computer program and complemented by experimental model test. The soil medium employed was a remolded soft clay. Moreover, linear elastic and modified cam-clay soil models were used in the numerical analysis. It was assumed that the deformation behaviour follows plane strain consolidation. The base inc linations adopted in the numerical analysis were 3, 5, 8, 10 and 15 degrees. Likewise, experimental model tests were performed for 5 and 15 degrees base inclinations. Both investigations indicate that the horizontal displacement is directed towards the side of maximum depth of the base. The horizontal displacement was found to be dependent on base .incl ination. That is, markedly less for lower base inclination . The effect of the base inclination to the horizontal displacement at the surface diminishes for a considerable h eight of the compressible stratum. Furthermore, the results indicate that horizontal displacement occurs even during con. |
