AbstractConsolidation characteristics of soft Muar clay was studied in conjunction with the construction of the Malaysian Interurban North - South Expressway. Site investigation and sampling was done at the tested embankments site in which various ground improvement techniques were proposed in order to select the most feasible method. General soil properties of the clay and intensive consolidation testing programme was conducted in order to obtain the required parameters. Data obtained were subsequently analysed and a Laboratory model on ground improvement technique using vertical sand drain was performed in the laboratory using Rowe's cell. From the experimental investigation, the results show that the installation of sand drain column in the soil sample, improved the soil properties of the clay and the rate of consolidation is increased.
