AbstractThe effect of soil-structure interaction associated with compaction of granular soil around large flexible pipes was studied by an aid of a finite element program (FEAP). A modification was made to the program to make use of it . In this study the compaction effect of side backfill on the pre-deflected behaviour of buried pipe was studied by a new approach of input pressure application scheme to the FEM system . The effect of the variation in flexibility of soil-pipe system on deformations and moments were evaluated and the results are presented. The analysis yield the pre-deflection behaviour in the same manner as that usually observed in the field. For flexible pipe in high compaction, deflection from compact side backfill will be very large while recovery from fill above pipe will be very small. Therefore, pre-deflected pipe shape can be much different from the circular shape that is usually assumed in the traditional design of buried pipes.
