AbstractA finite element computer program available at AIT is used to study the effect of soil-structure interaction on the behavior of an anchored bulkhead wall embedded in stratified soil, namely soft clay overlying medium/ stiff clay. The soil is considered to have elasto-plastic behavior. The effects of various parameters were investigated. The results of the FEM are also compared with those from the anal yses using the conventional methods, namely, the free earth method, the free earth method with Rowe moment reduction, the fixed earth method and the Bowles subgrade reaction method. The results of the FEM analysis, which directly account for the effect of soil-structure interaction, indicate that the conventional methods tend to give conservative designs of the wall member. The FEM analysis yields results comparable to those observed in two case histories.
