AbstractA study on the dynamic behaviour of Srinagarind Dam, a zoned rockfill dam in Kanchanaburi , Thailand, is presented, based on a reservoir-induced design earthquake of magnitude 6.5, with the resulting peak acceleration of 0.45g and the current state-of-the-art dynamic analysis. The tallest cross-section of the dam is modelled as a plane strain system with the soil-structure interaction effects neglected . The static stresses prior to t he earthquake were calculated by the computer program ISBILD simulating ten construction layers . A probabilistic approach to seismic response analysis was carried out using the program PLUSH, which employs the equivalent linear method to simulate material nonlinearity. Only horizontal input motions are considered and hydrodynamic interaction effect s are modelled by an added mass. Full reservoir condition is assumed in the analysis. The probability of dam failure due to overtopping is evaluated considering the crest deformations due to ground shaking, and the reservoir water level elevation as random variables . Permanent vertical deformations of the dam crest due to earthquake action according to the method proposed by Lee, are calculated. Yield accelerations of the potential failure surfaces are determined, base~ on t he conventional slope stability analysis after Bishop. Mont e Carl o simulation is employed in the evaluation of the dynamic slope displacement of a potential failure surface, which is conducted according to Newmark' s sliding block concept. Both the lower and upper bound estimates in t he material properties, are considered in the evaluation of the yield accel e ration and permanent deformation of the dam. The probability of dam failure for different vertical settlements and yield accelerations, is given for different service lives of the dam. The effect of dam freeboard on the probability of overtopping is also investigated . The results show that the failure probability of earthquake-related overtopping is very small.
