Abstract | Eight methods of soft soil improvement techniques are applied to a trial embankment at the Muar flat in Malaysia to evaluate their cost and effectiveness. These improvement techniques can be classified into three groups, namely, Mechanical Method CP reloading and Vertical Drains); Structural Method (Concrete Pile and Compaction Sand Pile) and Physical and Chemical Method C Electro- osmosis and Sulphonated Petroleum Chemical Injection). A preliminary study of these techniques secondary soil data obtained from the trail location is mad e. The studies include a review of involved, construction methods and the relative construction. based on embankment theories cost of The soft clay deposit is very homogeneous and is about 20 m thick. The moisture content is high and exceeds liquid limit. The organic content is less than 0. 5% and pH value is between 5. 4 to 7. 7. Sensitivity range from 2 to 7. A 2m thick weathered crust is found on the surface. The field vane shear strength varies from 10 kN/ml below the crust to 40 kN/ml at 1 Bm depth. su/crv0 ' =O. 31, and ch = 2cv. It is found that earth fill preloading and vertical drains are likely to be effective and cheap. However, the difficulties and uncertainties in determination and selection of design parameters make an accurate prediction of rate of settlement difficult. The effectiveness of piled embankment has been proved by successful construction cases in the region. The cost of construction is high when the soft clay deposit is thick. Suitability of other less commonly used physical and chemical methods are also discussed. |
