Abstract | Ferrocement as a composite material is gaining wide acceptance in both the developed and developing countries. This is mainly due to its many uses and the materials required are available in most countries. In order to utilize ferrocement efficiently as a structural material, a study of its potentials and weaknesses is highly desirable. One such property which needs to be understood fully is its fracture properties. Experimental investigations have been conducted by Ganesan and Gonzales on the fracture properties of ferrocement. In this study, further investigation on the fracture properties of ferrocement was undertaken. Ferrocement beams were tested to investigate the applicability of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPEM) concepts, namely, the J -integral and critical crack opening displacement approach. The notched vs unnotched beam technique was used to determine the J - integral and crack opening displacement. To study the influence of the different parameters, specimen span l ength and wire mesh opening size were varied, while the other parameters were kept constant. From the results it was observed that the J-integral and crack opening displacement were not affected by the variation of specimen span length and wire mesh opening size. From the results of previous studies conducted by Ganesan and Gonzales and from this study, it can be stressed t hat J-integral and crack opening displacement are both promising fracture criteria for ferrocement. |
