AbstractThe purpose of this experimental program is to investigate the mechanical properties of palm fiber-cement composites . Palm fibers are used as reinforcement whereas 70% of cement plus 30% of rice husk ash is used as a matrix . Before determining the mechanical and physical properties of palm fiber-c ement composites , the properties of palm fibers and c ement matrix are separately investigated. The composites have been tested in axial compression, flexure and for their water absorption property . The main parameters in this experiment are the fiber-cement ratio and unit weight. The fiber- c ement ratio varies from 0.250, 0.275, 0 . 300 and 0.325 by weight and unit weight varies from 550, 650 and 750 kg/m3 • Test results indicated that the optimum mix of the composite was a mix with fiber- cement ratio 0 . 300 by weight and unit weight 750 kg/m3 • The optimum mix resulted in highest strength both in compression and bending properties. Moisture content of the composites was found to be 10% and water absorption was 42% by weight. The toughness and ductility of palm fiber- cement composites were also very high compared to those of wood-wool board which is available in the market.
