AbstractPrevious researches have shown that the existing design codes and practice overdesign the double diagonal cross bracings by ignoring the strength of these diagonals that are in compression. A theoretical analysis !las been car1·ied out to study the behaviour of angle double diagonal cross bracings with initial imperfections and load eccentricities. An elastic-plastic model utilizing the Perry-Robertson formula with a new geometry imperfection factor h as been used to study the realistic behaviour of the systems. The second mode buckling in the compression diagonal has been found to be independent of its initial crookedness and load eccentricity. When the tensile stress in the tension diagonal equals or exceeds 6096 of the compressive stress in the compression diagonal, second mode buckling failure will occur. The interconnection joint at the mid- span of diagonals deflects out- of-the-plane of truss and the maximum deflection is of finite magnitude. Finally, a design method which gives higher allowable load carrying capacities of angle double diagonal cross bracings has been proposed.
