Abstract | This thesis presents the results of an investigation of the consolidation and shear strength parameters obtained from oedometer and CK.U tests. The subsoil in this area from the ground level to 20. 0 m. consists of three layers, that is weathered clay, soft clay and stiff c la y. The thickness of weathered clay is about 2. 0 m. But in the soft clay the thickness is a bout 10 - 12 m. The results lead to the following conclusions: 1 . The compression index, Cc lies between 0 . 60 - 1. 40 and 0. 16 - 0. 27 for soft clay and stiff clay respectively. 2. The coefficient of consolidation (Cv ,or Ch): In this test the ratio Ch/Cv is more than 1 . 0 except in the weathered zone, where OCR is high . Cv and Ch tend to decrease with depth, except in the weathered zone. 3. The relations of Young's Modulus ( E) and f j el d vane undrained s hear strength are as follows: Eu = ( 90 to 1 30) Su (for soft clay) 4. The Af parameter from the stress-pat h test lies between 0 . 3 0 and 0 . 73. It varies with depth, becoming small near the natural surface as the over consolidation ratio increases. 5. The value of c' and ' from the CK. U test s h owed that in the soft and stiff clay the ' value is not different. But the c' of the soft clay and stiff clay is quite different. The c' of the stiff clay is greater than that of soft clay. 6. The Undrained shear strength is a function of the consolidation pressure. |
