AbstractThis thesis presents the results of an investigation of strength and deformation characteristics of stiff bangkok clay. Specimens from a depth of 24. 5-26. 5 m were tested under Ka -anisotropically consolidated undrained and isotropically consolidated drained conditions. Also samples were isotropically consolidated to higher pressure and subsequently were released to a certain pressure to get the same water content before shearing. The results of CKoU tests show samples fail at a lower strain for normally consolidated specimens than for overconsolidated samples. The softening is pronounced at higher consolidation pressures. The normalized pore pressure - stress ratio relationship has a linear variation with different slope values for samples having a low and high consolidation pressure respectively. The overconsolidation affects the pore pressure development and the undrained shear strength. The pore pressure -stress ratio relationship is bilinear for the normally consolidated and overconsolidated condition but with different gradient. The values of shear strength parameter c and $ are as follows: CKoU CID (CIU)ov c (t/m2) 1 5 1 0 22 1 6 20
