AbstractThe geology of the study area consists of unconsolidated fluvial and aeolian sediments overlying a weathered bedrock, the Mahasarakam Formation. The age of some of the geological units obtained and the landform features suggest that the landform here is very young. The thickness of these Quaternary sediments are generally not more than 2 meters on average, based on field and resistivity investigations. Hence, the surficial deposits here are not important aquifers for groundwater The groundwater in the study area is found mainly within the fractured and faulted bedrock. Weathering of the bedrock also increases the storage capacity of the aquifer. The quality of the groundwater here is dependent on the topography of the well sites. In areas of high elevations which are also the anticlines of the underlying Mahasarakam Formation, the groundwater is generally of low salinity and high quality. In the floodplains which occupy the lowest elevations, the groundw~ter is highly saline and of low standards. The source of the salinity here is caused by the uprising of brine from the dissolution of the salt beds within the Mahasarakam Formation. High nitrate content of the groundwater is caused by the leachates from the surface waste materials and the use of fertilizers in the fields. About 32% of the annual precipitation or about 1200 mm. occurs as the groundwater recharge and of these, about 45 % or 80 million m3 for the study area, are good quality drinking water. The remainder of the precipitation is due to loss from runoff into streams and to evapotranspiration.
