AbstractRockbolts and Shotcrete are relatively new support systems which are being increasingly used in underground constructions. Many types of rockbolts are in use according to the nature of construction and ground. The design of rockbolt and shotcrete support system may be done by empirical methods , or analytical methods or observational method s. The quality of installed support system is checked periodically by instrumenting t he support system to ensure safety of underground openings. The New Austrian Tunnelling Method, NATM, utilizes rockbolts and shotcrete as main supporting system, especially, in difficult ground conditions. The met hod uses the flexibility of the rockbolt - shotcrete support system to control the ground movements. An observational method of de sign of immediate support of the exposed rock is used in NATM. Analysis of case histories shows that in general t h ere is an inverse relationship between RQD value of the rock mass and the support pressure provided.
