Abstract | The domestic air travel demand forecasting model and fleet scheduling in Thailand has been developed as an aid to the newly merged public sector airline company (THAI) which will operate both the domestic and international routes, whose objective is to maximize customer satisfaction. The study was done in two parts. First, using the gravity model concept, a Demand Forecasting nodel (DFH) was developed to forecast the intercity air traffic demand of the country. The model with provincial population, intercity distance, tourist movement factor, market proximity factor, road connectivity· factor and rail road connectivity factor was found to significantly explain 67% of the variation of domestic air traffic of Thailand. Secondly, a fleet scheduling was formulated to forecast the demand for aircraft types for the air transportation network of Thailand. The air transportation network was analysed by forming Northern, eastern, Southern and Bangkok connected flight regions and supply of aircraft needed for each region was closely predicted. A fleet schedule was pre• pared for each region and for the entire air transportation network, of Thailand. Due to non-availability of necessary data, profitable/non profitable route sectors were not identified. However, it was concluded that the developed air travel demand forecasting model and the fleet schedule is very useful at this stage for the new public sector airline company for the analysis of financial investment requirements and feasibility study and further research is suggested in this field. |
