AbstractResults of a series of laboratory tests on greywacke rockfill from the quarry site of Chiew Larn Dam, Surathani, Thailand, under ka-triaxial compression and isotropically consolidated extension are discussed in this study. The large-scaled triaxial apparatus C 30 0x600 mm.> is used in the ka-triaxial compression tests and results compared with the conventional test results. The ko-value used in this study follows the results obtained from large oedometer tests by HSU C 1 983 > and LEE C 1986), that is 0. 39. The normali2ed stress-strain behavior is observed in k. - triaxial compression and isotropically consolidated extension tests only at pre - sharing confining pressure higher than 60 t/m2 • However, in isotropically consolidated comprression tests, non - normalized behavior was reported by LEE C1 986) and LIEU C198 7>. The angles of internal friction ($) in ka - triaxial compression tests vary from 39° to 44. 5° at their corresponding confining pressure of from 60 t/ m2 to 5 t/m2 . In isotropically consolidated extension tests, the $ angles vary from 33° to 50° at their corresponding confining pressure of from 90 t/m2 to 10 t/m2 . Generally, they all decrease with the increasing of pre - shearing confining pressure. The Incremental Stress-Strain Theory, modified by LEE <1986), fail s to predict the shear and volumetric strain for drained test under ka-triaxial compression cases. It ca n not be suitable in isotropically consolidated extension case neither, for the non - linear relations hip of u-~ plot in extension test. This model is only good for comp acted rockfills underisotropically consolidated compression.
