Abstract | Existing and potential alternative income opportunities in rural villages are investigated, situated in a valley section and located in an adjoining urban center. Given the socio-economic setting and spatial characteristics of the area, opportunities at household, sectoral, or spatial level identified as the result of interactions between cultural attainment and resource accessibility. Farm as we ll as non-farm income opportunities were available. People of different categories were deriving income from more than one type one single opportunities. Those people availing profitable income opportunities in one sector were also able to hold such opportunities in an other sector. Income opportunities largely available and accessible to the weaker sections of society were of the low income generating type, given certain constraints like that of small land holding size. From the economic point of view, two sectors namely, agricultural wage labor and traditional craftsmanship were largely available to the identified weaker section of the communities, i.e . , the traditional artisans, the uneducated and small households of landless, marginal and small farmers. Attempts to identify alternative opportunities to generate income or actions taken in the direction of exploring the potential of alternative activities by individuals in search of profitable income opportunity indicating continuation of existing patterns. A certain though minor change towards taking initiative in searching for new income opportunities appeared at the spatial level in so far as some people at comparatively less accessible places took action with a view to change alternative income generating activities the majority of these households belonged to established, the prosperous groups. Recommendations for planning include a local resource based specific proposal to assist group seeking alternative income opportunities through target oriented as well as integrated approaches. |
