Abstract | People 's participation in rural development h as been a major development strategy of the Government since 1982 to encourage people to involve in improving their living conditions in which higher self-reliance can be developed f rom within the community. The Pichit Land Reform Rural Development Support Project is formulate d in a manner that encourages participation and involvement of villager sin the area. Its strategy aims at e n s u ring the program a n d activities fostered under the project can be continued and expanded when the government assistance is phased out in 1989. Th e study is an attempt to assess the potential for participation of people in rural development under the agricultural land reform development program and to explore the extent to which meaningful participation has occurred in practice at the village level under the influence o f government agencies . The findings of the study reveal the facts that the villagers got extensive experience involvement in development activities introduced frontside the community , generally the government agencies , therefor e the villagers mostly perceive participation to b e a matter of t he government formulating the activities and encouraging the n1 to participate. Nevertheless, the participation of the villagers which aims to bring a bout t h e awareness of the need for self-reliance to s u stain development programs in the longer term will not be occurred unless the villagers are initially trained to identify community difficulties and the ineeds to develop as well as to initiate solutions for implementing b y the irown ideas while assistance from outside the community is sought if necessary . Recommendations are presented f or improving villagers ' participation in rural development program, for villagers ' participation in formulating the ALRO development program a n d for fort her studies relate d to this issue. |
