Abstract | A well integrated network of market centres generates economic growth in t he countryside through purchase of agricultural products and supply of consumer goods . Functions of individual market centres are analysed to examine how far the market centres effectively serve t he rural areas and indeed help to generate economic growth in the countryside. The analysis includes the market prices of the standard goods, flow of goods and commodities, and origin of customers at the market centres . Marketing being a recently developed commercial activity most of the market centres are found to be trading imported goods . The prices of goods and commodities are found to be higher in the remote areas where there are poor transport linkages . The rural population has bypassed small market centres for their major transactions in buying and selling . Small market s are identified as the centres of entertainment to isolated rural population . The concentration of administration and transport facilities in the t own have dominated small markets with regard to market functions. It is verified that small markets have overall higher frequencies of visits than bigger centres. Based on the analysis it is recommended t hat the transport network must be developed to l ink small market centres. This could stimulate the countryside for market oriented agricultural production. The investigation of enroute market centres verified their development to become trade centres, initiating economic development in their hinterland through the supply of consumer goods at cheaper prices and purchase of agricultural produce at t he price level of the town. |
