Abstract | Developments in t h e fishery sector of which aquaculture is a part showed imbalance in the distribution of b e ne fi t s which resulted to a dualistic structure in the rural economy. Thus the need therefore to analyze the socio-economic phenomenon arising from the developments of aquaculture to guide planners and decision- makers to ensure a balanced allocation and disposition of resources in the coastal fishing communities. The study aims to gain insight into the socio-economic composition/dimensions of prawn farming in relation to rural development; concerns with the evaluation of some implications of the changes it has brought; and assessment of the extent of b e ne fits from the industry. Results showed that there were socio-economic differences between prawn farm operators and be tween them and the local community dwellers. Both benefits and dis benefits (harmful effects) have been felt in the study area of Calabanga and Tinambac, the greater portion of the benefits having accrued to those already well off in the rural society. On the basis of the research findings , policy implications were reviewed a nd recommendations for further research were suggested to check the existing socioeconomic imbalance and enhance expected benefits from the prawn farming activities for a greater number of the rural populace . |
