| Abstract | One of the reasons why we use hierarchical planning method is that it can break down complex problems to simpler sub -problems. The plant under study has a bottleneck department. This department faces a multi-item, single stage, irrelevant machines problem. Exact production-sch eduling plus machine-allocation problem in this setting has no elegant computationally feasible solution in literature. A hierarchical planning system is developed for this department. The system is divided into t hree levels. The first level allocates machine capacity to t he production of items. After this machine loading procedure, the problem is simplified to multi- item, single stage, single machine problem. Level 2 makes cyclic schedule for the machines individually. These master schedules are themselves operative. Level 3 is optional. It can be used to verify the solution found a t Level 2 or adapt the master schedules for to cope with the dynamic demand situation . An experimental illustration is given for showing how to implement the proposed system. |
