Abstract | This study concerns the development and implementation of a production model for a se t of facilities in a mosaic tile manufacturing company. The production system under study consists of three major stages that is , dry powder body pressing, glazing and firing in tunnel kiln. The production process i s characterized by very high setup and holding costs due to the wide variety of products to be produced. There is also a problem of allocating pressed materials to kiln areas ( zones) for color control. The general objective of the model is to improve the existing planning and scheduling algorithm. The objective function of the model is to maximize sales contribution and minimize the relevant cost. The model uses integer linear programming to find a set of orders to be produced and linear programming to find the optimal allocation of pressed materials to kiln zones. Capacitated lot sizing model is then used to establish individual product runs on each machine. Finally, the actual sequences are found by applying a traveling salesman algorithm . The results obtained by the model are compared with the existing intuitive way of planning and scheduling. The comparison reveals that it will be fruitful to use this d eve loped model to fulfill the company objectives. |
