AbstractThis thesis considers the production planning for an Asbestos-Cement Sheet Plant. Its main emphasis is on production scheduling of multiple products on two machines u sing a hierarchical planning approach. Actually , this model is divided into three steps. The first step is to determine the reorder interval profiles. Th e second step is scheduling on each machine by using a lot sizing linear programming model. 'The last step is sequencing the production in each period. It is shown that the natural constraints of the real1 if e problem provide a special structure which ·allows an efficient formulation of the problem as a nonlinear integer program. An implicit enumeration algorithm by assuming the constant reorder intervals are powers-of-two multiples of some base planning interval is presented. Computational experience shows that the algorithm is quite efficient when the number of products does not exceed five or six . In the production of the factory under study , this number is rarely exceeded; therefore, it is possible to employ the model as one of the basic tools used by a team responsible for the development of a production plan.
