AbstractIn this study an attempt has been made to estimate the major component of cost for the construction of Kra Canal. The same alignment for the route has been adopted as proposed by TAMS in their 1973 study. The estimates for quantities were made from the cross-sections taken at 5 km intervals along this route using the survey maps. Three disposal sites for excavated material were identified along the route and their capacities estimated from the area available at each site. Major equipment required for drilling, loading and haulage of muck and for dredging were selected, their use rates computed and then unit costs for drilling and blasting, loading and hauling of excavated material computed by considering appropriate rolling and grade resistance for the hauling units. Two canal configurations were considered in this study - one and two lanes canal. The costs were estimated for three sizes of vessels which would use the canal. All canal -configurations examined are technically feasible using conventional construction. The excavation of canal by nuclear method also appears to be technically feasible. However, the political problems of using nuclear device are extremely complex and are both national and international in scope. Hence, conventional excavation is used in this research. The study also revealed the significance of the comprehensive development project for the Kra Canal.
