AbstractThe factors that affect investment are identified in this thesis by considering the profit-making behavior of investors and firms. The effects of these factors on investment shares in manufacturing are hypothesized in terms of the expected patterns and behavior of the shares over time . Focusing on the manufacturing industry, seven sectors are identified, namely: food, textiles, wood and paper, chemicals, non- metal, basic metal and metal products. For each sector, time series data on the sector ' s investment share in total manufacturing investment for selected developed and developing countries are gathered , analysed for patterns and trends , and compared with those hypothesized . It is found that the expected movements in the investment shares of the various sectors of manufacturing in the developed and developing countries generally conform with the hypothesis. The developed countries as a group have shown relatively more similarity in the patterns of their sectoral investment shares than the developing countries which exhibited more fluctuations and differences in their investment shares patterns. This seems to suggest that a further subdivision of the developing group is needed in the analysis of patterns of investment s hares by country group .
