AbstractOptimum development and management of water resources of a river basin requires quantitative assessment of the maximum possible ground water that can be extracted from the basin , namely its 'safe yield' , to meet specific user requirements without causing any undesirable result and satisfying various physical, economic, social, environmental, legal, institutional, a n d political constraints. A state-of-art review of various methodologies for estimating safe yield of ground water basin sis made. A brief assessment of the methodologies is also made from practical point of view. Methods and models available vary in their origin (assumptions ) , applicability, sophistication and data needs , and accuracy. Due to the inherent uncertainties about ground water and the dynamic nature of safe yield, which varies with time and specified conditions , these methods should be considered as complimentary and successive in nature while applying to real world problems.
