AbstractExisting statistical software, although quite powerful and computation a l easy to u se, requires considerable statistical knowledge to be used effectively. The user must have adequate knowledge in statistics and u se some rules and experiences to determine t hat the statistical result is good or not . It brings user much inconvenience, especially to those users who know nothing about statistics. In this study , an consultation system for fitting distributions to sample data (CSFFD ) is designed to help someone with or without statistical background and an expert to select a best fi t ted distribution on a particular set of data among a group of accepted distributions. The CSFFD which we built encodes enough knowledge a nd individual experiences to do fitting distributions effectively. It can also be used as a tool for general purpose in statistics, such as parameter estimation, PDF and CDF computation , sample statistical computation , histogram , PDF and CDF graph drawing, a nd goodness of fit test and so on. Several typical sets of data were selected to test the workability of CSFFD . The result showed that al l the modules which are used in CSFFD are correct and satisfactory. The strategy which was used for logical reasoning and knowledge representation makes the whole consultation system execute with optima l speed.
