AbstractBatch carbonization of sawdust briquettes were carried out in a brick kiln of 2 m3 capacity to study the mass and energy balance of kiln operation , effect of stacking arrangement, stack extension, fin al temperature , heating rate and other opera ting conditions on yield, quality and physical properties of charcoal produced. Also, a co ntinuous sawdust carboniser wa s designed , fabricat ed and operated with sun- dried sawdust and effect of residence time and metal temperature on yield, production rate and quality of charcoal was studied. Sized dry sawdust briquettes were carbonized furnace at twenty-eight various combinations temperature and holding time; yield and quality charcoal was assessed. in a Muffle of fin al of resultant Experiment was conducted to find the development of longitudinal strain in sawdust briquette heated in a Muffle furnace. It was observed that briquettes first expand before finally shrinking down. A simple mathematical model was formulated to predict the evolution of centre temperature and weight loss history in heated briquette cylinder. Model results were found to have qualitative agreement with experimental results.
