AbstractStorage and retrieval policies for unitload, miniload and person - on- board automated storage and retrieval systems are studied. Existing policies are reappraised and new policies developed. In the case of a single command unitload system, differences in space utilization arc shown to be crucial for judging storage policies . The turnover- based storage policy , claimed to be optimal in the literature , can be significantly improved using a class design methodology based on a dynamic programming approach. A reduction of more t h an 2 0 % in travel time ca n be ac hi eve d by the props d approach wit h an increment of less t h a n 5% in inventory cost. An effective s l:orage policy and an efficient interleaving rule are essential f or operating a dual command unitload system. The importance of space utilities in designing a storage policy under dual command mode is verified. Interleaving under dedicated Storage is formulated as a minimum cost flow problem. Efficient heuristics are recommended for interleaving under randon1ized and class- based storage . Operational problems of the mini load and personĀ· on - board systems are analyzed and shown to be similar . Principles and algorithms are provided for locating it ems in the mini load and person- on - board systems . Some of these principles and algorithms are tested using a simulation study and a real life case study. It become::: clear that., in comparison with a randomized policy, a combination of efficient retrieval and storage can reduce up to 80% of the picking machine travel time in a person- on- board system.
