AbstractThe operation, testing and analysis of batch distillation reaction pilot plant, i.e batch reactor, packed distillation column, condenser is investigated . Experiments were conducted in finding the heat transfer coefficient of jacketed batch reactor and condenser. The heat transfer coefficient of jacketed batch reactor varies on the mass flowrate of heating medium and stirring rate. The results show that at worst condition { oil flow rate of 81 kg/hr and 0 RPM stirring rate ) and best condition {oil flow rate of 146 kg/hr and 310 RPM stirring rate) the product b e tween the overall heat transfer coefficient and cross-sectional are a of flow is 9.17 W/ 0 c and 12.47 W/°C, respectively. The heat, energy and availability analyses are used to identify locations , type and true magnitudes of waste energy, including losses and irreversibility from the system. The first law efficiencies of batch reactor are 58% and 61% for the worst and best case, respectively. Distilling rate of ethanol is also being studied at constant power supply. The results show that the distilling rate decreases as time elapsed . The distillate produced is more or less constant at 87% ethanol by volume. Mod e l equation of the relationship of pressure concentration-temperature of ethanol-water mixture is established based upon the experiments obtained, i . e. temperature concentration relationship of ethanol-water mixture at diff e rent pressures { 0 . 2 < P < 1 . 8 ) , where P is in bar.
