AbstractSolar assisted distillation of ethanol fuel is examined by constructing and operating a basin type, single sloped solar still. First, the solar still having a surface area of l.4 x 0.54 sq.m. was designed and built with the components of temperature measuring devices, and the instruments were calibrated to ensure accurate measurements . Experiment was performed by using fermented alcohol solutions made out of rice and palm. Daily average distillation rate of the system was around 3. l k~/rn2 and the average alcohol concentration of the distillate was found to be 14% by volume. Then the experiment result were analyzed to determine the annual useful! energy output of the system for the alcohol distillation, with the aid of n solar radiation model and found to be around 1770 MJ/m2. Economic analysis showed that the production cost per lit. of the product is 1. 37 Baht/1 at an expected life Lime of 10 years and an interest rate of 10% per annum. This value has been compared with the existing alcohol distillation plant,1'ISTR, Thailand and found Lo be 8. 17 Baht./l.
