AbstractThis is a case study on the application of the Box Jenkins technique of time series analysis to the analysis of water quality data of two tributaries of Klang River in Malaysia. In the first ~art of the study, models were formulated using five years of monthly water quality series. The ability of the models to forecast 'average' water quality was then evaluated utilizing nonparametric Mann Whitney test on the sample ~ets of twelve months ahead forecasts and the observed water quality in the sixth year. The average' water quality C represented by the 50 percentile , in this study) predicted by the models which passed the test, is in close· agreement with the observed values. The second part of the study is concerned with modeling using six years of quarterly data. With sufficient data points, forecasts from models based on the quarterly data may provide useful information for the purpose of management of water quality.
