AbstractThis research was carried out to investigate the effect of specimen size on consolidation characteristics and undrained shear strength of soft Bangkok clay. Block sampl es were taken manually from a trench C Gm x 4m x 3m > at the site of AIT Campus, Rangsit. Eight consolidation tests were carried out on specimens with diameters of 2 . 5", 4" and 6 ". Specimens were tested in both lever-arm oedometer and Rowe hydraulic oedometer. Nine unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests were performed on specimens with diameters and heights of 104" x 2. 8", 2 " x 4" and 4" x 8". For all practical purposes the tests results that the size of the specimen had no effect consolidation characteristics and undrained shear of soft Bangkok clay. showed on the strength Both lever-arm type and hydraulic type consolidation apparatus do not have an effect on the measured consolidation properties. However, deflection correction has to be taken into account for actural settlement amount in lever- arm oedometer.
