AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of the use of rattan as reinforcement. The mechanical properties of rattan closely related to its use as a reinforcement in concrete structures were tested, namely: the tensile strength of rattan with skin and without skin, rate of moisture absorption of treated and untreated rattan, the dimensional changes due to moisture variation, and its bond with concrete under various surf ace treatment and anchorages. A variety of rattan scientifically called C.Blumei known locally as " Ka Long" in Thailand was used in the investigation. The test results showed a low tensile strength for this kind of species as compared with other species reported. The test results also showed that the bond between cement mortar and untreated rattan was low, but treated rattan with a waterproofing agent could result in better bond strength and help in preventing the decay of the rattan. The bond value is increased when curved anchorage is provided.
